Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), the recently released OPPO Reno 12 F 5G is OPPO’s latest addition to its highly popular Reno Series of smartphones. At 163mm in height and 75mm in width, the phone is a comfortable fit for most users. Around 7.76mm thick and 187g heavy, the Reno12 is also sleek and light.
Despite its simple dimensions, the phone is minimally stylish, especially with its new Cosmos ring design that hosts a dynamic halo light and three cameras.
For the cameras, the three located inside the cosmos ring consist of an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 50MP ultra-clear main camera. For selfie lovers, the front of the Reno 12 F has a 32MP ultra-clear selfie camera.
The Reno12 F also boasts a very strong 5,000 mAh. After a single full charge, the smartphone can withstand up to 1.94 days—, nearly two days—of regular use. Additionally, the technology behind the battery allows it to provide over four years of excellent performance.
Picture perfect

The cameras excel at various tasks with exceptional precision. For example, the Ultra Clear Main Camera takes pictures with astounding clarity, while the Ultra Wide Angle Camera is perfect for landscape shots.
Its impressively diverse cameras are also OPPO’s push for AI through the Reno 12 F’s different features, such as the AI Studio, AI Smart Matting 2.0, and AI Eraser 2.0. Do note, however, that an active internet connection is required to use the features.
Good gaming performance
Boasting the new MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, the Reno12 F is a beast when it comes to gaming. We tested two of the newest titles in the mobile gaming market and a slightly older title to see how they ran on OPPO’s latest hardware.
Though it is notoriously poorly optimized for mobile devices, “Wuthering Waves” (WuWa) ran well on the Reno 12 F, even if it took forever to set up the game. Other than the slight framerate dips, in-game performance was relatively smooth during open-world exploration and fighting.
The experience was better in the more optimized “Zenless Zone Zero” (ZZZ). Unless there were a lot of things happening on the screen at the same time, there was very little framerate loss or lag in HoYoverse’s latest game.
That said, both games saw the worst performance when using the smartphone’s in-built screen recorder.
WuWa would drop to below 20 fps, which in turn caused an input delay where the game would not detect the buttons being pressed until 2-3 seconds later, making dodging attacks a nightmare. In ZZZ, the game experienced the same, but not to the extent of WuWa.
Both games also saw random stuttering during story scenes for no apparent reason, like how ZZZ’s simple dialogue scenes involving characters standing still and talking would abruptly begin to stutter.
Finally, it was “Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent’s” turn to be tested, and it was naturally much smoother than the aforementioned two. It is a four-year-old game, after all.
Based on these parameters, it’s safe to say the Reno 12 F would work well with older games like “Mobile Legends,” “PUBG,” and “Call of Duty Mobile” which are more popular in Malaysia, as these games are also optimized to work well with almost every phone.
Longer gaming on a strong battery

On the matter of battery drain, while playing the games, an hour of gameplay on WuWa and ZZZ brought the battery down by roughly 5% each on WiFi and almost 10% while on mobile data. Ironically, downloading and installing the games took more out of the battery.
These are good numbers, as both games were developed to run on high-end smartphones and current-generation console games like the PlayStation 5.
Overall, the phone is impressive, and at its price range, it’s a great investment, whether you’re into snapping photos, casual gaming, or everything in between involving regular smartphone use.
